Overview

X-ray is the oldest medical imaging technique and still the most frequently performed, because for a large range of clinical questions it is simply the right test. A suspected fracture, a chest infection, a swallowed foreign body, joint alignment before surgery — these are answered faster and at lower cost by a plain radiograph than by any advanced scan. The Procedure
Registration & Preparation
Most X-rays need no preparation — no fasting, no injection, no medication. You will be asked to remove jewellery, coins, belts, and clothing with metal fasteners from the area being imaged, and may be given a gown.
Positioning
The radiographer positions the body part against the detector and explains exactly how to stand, sit, or lie. Correct positioning is what makes an X-ray diagnostic, so a minute spent getting it right avoids a repeat exposure.
Exposure
You hold still, and for chest films hold your breath, for a fraction of a second while the exposure is taken. It is completely painless and you feel nothing at all.
Image Check
The image appears on the console within seconds. The radiographer confirms it covers the required area and is technically adequate before you leave, so any repeat happens immediately rather than requiring a second visit.
Additional Views
Some examinations need two or more projections — typically front and side — because a fracture invisible on one view is often obvious on another. This is routine, not a sign that something was wrong with the first image.
Reporting
Images are stored digitally and reported by a consultant radiologist, usually the same day. Reports and images are released to your treating doctor within the hospital system and shared with you digitally.
