Overview

At AIROC Hospitals, ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves rather than radiation to produce live images of organs, blood vessels, muscles, and developing babies. Because it is entirely free of ionising radiation, it can be used safely in pregnancy, repeated as often as needed, and used in children without hesitation. It shows movement as it happens — a beating heart, blood flowing through an artery, a baby shifting position — which no static scan can do.

Ultrasound is the most-used imaging test in medicine for good reason. It is quick, inexpensive, involves no radiation, requires no injection for most examinations, and gives an answer while the patient is still on the couch. For gallstones, kidney stones, liver texture, thyroid nodules, ovarian cysts, and virtually all of pregnancy care, it is not merely an acceptable first test — it is the best one. Colour Doppler extends the same machine to show blood flow direction and speed, which is how deep vein thrombosis, arterial narrowing, varicose vein reflux, and blood supply to a transplanted organ or a developing fetus are assessed.

Ultrasound is also uniquely operator-dependent, and this deserves saying plainly: the quality of the scan depends on the person holding the probe as much as on the machine. The Scan Process

Preparation

Requirements vary by examination. Abdominal scans usually need 6 to 8 hours of fasting so that gas and food do not obscure the view. Pelvic and obstetric scans in early pregnancy need a full bladder. Thyroid, breast, and Doppler scans need no preparation at all — you will be told exactly what applies when booking.

Arrival & Positioning

You lie on a couch and expose only the area being scanned. A gown or sheet is provided, and a female chaperone is available for any examination on request — please ask, as this is routine rather than an imposition.

The Scan

Warm gel is applied to the skin so the probe makes proper contact — sound waves do not travel through air, which is why the gel is essential. The sonologist moves the probe over the area, sometimes pressing firmly to displace bowel gas or to test whether an area is tender.

Doppler Assessment

Where blood flow is being examined, the machine adds colour overlays and an audible pulsing sound. Both are normal parts of the examination rather than an indication that something is wrong.

Duration

Most examinations take 15 to 30 minutes. Detailed obstetric anomaly scans and full Doppler studies take longer, occasionally up to an hour if the baby is poorly positioned and needs time to move.

Reporting

Findings are frequently discussed with you immediately after the scan, with the formal report available the same day and released to your treating doctor through the hospital system.
