Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL)

Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL)

What is Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia?

Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), also known as Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia, is a rapidly progressing cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow. It develops when the bone marrow produces an excessive number of immature white blood cells called lymphoblasts. These abnormal cells crowd out healthy blood cells, reducing the body's ability to fight infections, carry oxygen, and control bleeding.

ALL is the most common type of leukemia in children, but it can also occur in adults. With early diagnosis and advanced treatment, many patients achieve successful outcomes.

Causes & Risk Factors

Although the exact cause of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia is unknown, several factors may increase the risk, including:

  • Increasing age (common in children and adults over 50)
  • Male gender
  • Previous chemotherapy or radiation therapy
  • Exposure to high-dose radiation
  • Exposure to chemicals such as benzene
  • Genetic disorders, including Down syndrome
  • Family history of ALL (especially an identical twin or sibling)
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Certain inherited genetic mutations

Signs & Symptoms

Symptoms often develop suddenly and may worsen quickly.

Common symptoms include:

  • Persistent fever
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Frequent infections
  • Pale skin
  • Easy bruising or bleeding
  • Nosebleeds
  • Bleeding gums
  • Bone or joint pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck, armpits, or groin
  • Enlarged liver or spleen
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Night sweats

Diagnosis

Accurate diagnosis helps determine the subtype of leukemia and guides personalized treatment.

Diagnostic tests may include:

  • Complete Blood Count (CBC)
  • Peripheral Blood Smear
  • Bone Marrow Aspiration & Biopsy
  • Flow Cytometry
  • Cytogenetic & Molecular Testing
  • Genomic Testing
  • Lumbar Puncture (Spinal Tap)
  • CT Scan, MRI, PET-CT or Ultrasound (when required)

Types of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), ALL is classified into:

B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

  • B-cell ALL with genetic abnormalities
  • B-cell ALL (Not Otherwise Specified)

T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

  • T-cell ALL
  • Early T-cell Precursor Lymphoblastic Leukemia

Mixed Lineage Acute Leukemia

A rare form containing both lymphoid and myeloid leukemia cells.

Treatment Options

Treatment is individualized based on the patient's age, overall health, leukemia subtype, and genetic profile.

Chemotherapy

The primary treatment used to destroy leukemia cells through multiple treatment phases.

Targeted Therapy

Uses medications that specifically attack cancer cells with certain genetic mutations while minimizing damage to healthy cells.

Immunotherapy

Stimulates the body's immune system to recognize and destroy leukemia cells. Certain patients may benefit from CAR-T Cell Therapy or monoclonal antibody therapy.

Radiation Therapy

Used when leukemia has spread to the brain, spinal cord, or other specific areas.

Stem Cell (Bone Marrow) Transplant

Healthy stem cells replace damaged bone marrow after high-dose chemotherapy or radiation, helping restore normal blood cell production.

CNS Preventive Therapy

Special chemotherapy is administered into the spinal fluid to prevent leukemia from spreading to the central nervous system.

Prevention

There is no proven way to prevent Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. However, you may reduce certain risks by:

  • Avoiding tobacco products
  • Limiting exposure to harmful chemicals such as benzene
  • Following workplace radiation safety guidelines
  • Maintaining regular health check-ups
  • Seeking prompt medical attention for persistent symptoms

Prognosis

The outlook for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia depends on several factors, including:

  • Age at diagnosis
  • Leukemia subtype
  • Genetic mutations
  • Overall health
  • Response to treatment
  • Whether the disease has spread

Children generally have excellent treatment outcomes, while adults also benefit significantly from advances in targeted therapies, immunotherapy, and stem cell transplantation. Early diagnosis and timely treatment greatly improve survival rates and long-term recovery.
